Do you leave strawberry plants in pot once they have already finished producing strawberries leaving just leaves and some runners now?

What I do is peg some of the runners into small pots, until they start rooting (1-2weeks), cut them from the main plant and leave them to grow until can be potted on. Leave most of the leaves on my main plant, but off any dead bits.

Last year I simply left it alone, it hung outside all winter and did it no harm, didn't know about runners then!

So next year now I have the existing main hanging basket, plus enough runners to make 2 more baskets which I will leave outside again (or maybe in my new GH) until they fruit next year.

Yeah, I'm just at this point too. I have just pegged some of the runners into pots of compost and am waiting for them to root. I'm thinking about doing a trade with a friend with the new plants so that I have a couple of diff varieties?! I'm hoping they survive overwinter outside as I haven't got a greenhouse.

Strawberries are perfectly hardy so should be fine outside through the winter.
