Hello everyone.
My name is Darrin and I've always enjoyed gardening and often thought about getting an allotment. Unfortunately I was taken ill late last year and I had some very bad times and spent several weeks in hospital this year resulting in a lot of weakness so I decided the ideal route back to health would be an allotment.
We put our name down in May when I was discharged from hospital and within two months we were offered a lovely half plot. It was partly cultivated but very tired and uncared for. We've worked tirelessly to get it back to a pretty good standard, saving a lot of brassicas, leeks, shallots and potatoes in the process. We've planted carrots, beetroot and peas (all doing well), winter radishes (wonderful) but anything leafy lettuces, turnips, perpetual spinach, oriental greens have all been devoured by slugs.
We've also now acquired the adjacent half plot which is a jungle but has a lot of sad but recoverable raised beds. There's also an orchard of apples and pears (rotten with pear rust) on the plot. We're so lucky to get all this so quickly.
We can't wait for next year to really get our teeth into it.
