Hello from the REALLY sunny Malmesbury in South Africa

Hi all

I have been looking in at your site for a while! I have been gardening most of my life! From helping out as a child to having a garden service, to becoming a one girl gardener for a few customers! Now I am trying my hand at something a bit larger! One of my clients has asked me to establish a veggie "farm" but so far we have only done garlic, now 4 months old, kale and a few others!

So far I have encountered PROBLEM after Problem, but I suppose that is what it is all about! Mice, bad water, too little water, too much water...

Is it rude to start out ASKING FOR ADVICE? If not, anybody know what is wrong with my Kale? It started of VERY well, then after a few months this happened! I pulled out the first lot, but it is back! Turns yellow / dry around the edges and gest yellow spots!

Hello Julie and welcome from Sunny South Wales (yes, honestly...........today).
I'm growing lots of kale this year but the bits of leaf that the caterpillars haven't eaten looks green enough.
I'm guessing its some deficiency in the soil..........

Toys!

My toys! And the garlic! That now has rust, due to lots of late rain! But it is far enough along, I hope! At the moment I am just cutting out the worst leaves! There seems to be enough decent green left to get the cloves to maturity!

Welcome, At least you have a couple of decent vehicles, i used to own a fergy and and landrover just like those.
I agree that it looks like a deficiency, if your going to grow commercialy it would pay to have a soil analysis, sometimes fertilizer companies will do it free in the hope of sales. Fisons did one on my farm once. The soil looks interesting, not a stone in sight and very sandy. At least you must have plenty of elephant poo lying around.

I also do vermicomposting! I adore my worms! A friend has acess to Zebra poo! They LOVE that!
Will get the soil analysed! Though this little venture is organic! The hard route, but that is how it is!
My cabbages looked like hell on the outside but were little jewels inside! Spitzkop cabbages, smaller than normal and a very different flavour!

Hello, sorry can't really give much advice, others here are much more experienced than me,but I just got excited because my son, partner and my little grandson live in Cape Town, I love South Africa, beautiful country.

Am sure you will get some really helpful advice from the forum.

I do have an allotment, and love it, this is my 3rd year.

LOOOOOOVE the Series Is!! We had a SI 88" 'Shed' (no side windows) that old girl went everywhere without complaint. Once, even with water deep enough to reach her headlamps. How we miss the old dear!
