Hi everyone, I'm Mark and I live in Port Sunlight Wirral, I have just got the keys to my allotment after 4 yr wait. It's very over grown and I have no idea where to start so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Mark and welcome from not so sunlit South Wales
Plenty of advice on here about dealing with an overgrown plot - most of it comes down to - cover it with cardboard to smother the weeds, uncover sections and clear those and plant up immediately, don't rotovate or use weedkiller.

Anyway, what VC said. Just mark out a bit at a time, sort that bit out and stand back and admire it before moving on to the next bit. If you tackle a small area whenever you have time and suitable weather, you'll soon have it done.

Where are you based now? Thanks for the advice I'll take some pics as I go a neighbour on the site is going to help me and tell me what tools I need. I brought a carbon steel spade and fork from Aldi £6.99 each. Hope they won't break and some gardening cloves.

The basic rules when facing an overgrown patch are as follows. Clear a space roughly 1 metre square, place a chair and a small table on it, bring a flask of tea or other beverage. Sit down and survey your empire. Then expand outwards from there bit by bit, constantly returning to said chair to view your progress and plan.

Welcome Vegboi. I live over the water from you but work in Wirral. Hope you get off to a good start. It might be cold and hard work at this time of year, but it's far better to get your plot now, when you can get it properly prepared for a great 2014, than to be handed a jungle in the summer. Post some photos if you get a chance!

The shed is falling apart so asked previous tenant to take down greenhouse has no door so thinking of asking then to do the same

Think long and hard before getting rid of a greenhouse just because it doesn't have a door. If its structurally sound, keep it. You can easily make a new "door". Allotment mentaility is more about make do and mend than buy new.
I'd do up the shed too - have you seen how much a new one costs?

I don't have an allotment - just rapidly converting my back garden into one!
Like Veggiechicken says, it might be worth keeping/repairing the greenhouse if possible. They're very useful for different things throughout the year.
