New (ish) allotment - Brighton

Hello everyone!

Thought i'd officially say hello as i've been loitering on the forum for a few days now! I took on a plot in October, but had previously been a co-worker for the previous tenant. Basically, during my time as co-worker i had a baby, took ill & now it's my turn as tenant... The plot is in an overwhelming state!! I wondered if i could ask for advice as to what to be getting on with in Jan? I've planned out a couple of raised beds & a polytunnel... But not sure what order to be doing things as the weeds (oh, the weeds!!) distract me!!

I've taken a few photos so you can see where i'm at...
Unsure if the pics actually help?!! But if somebody could give me a few pointers then i'd really appreciate it!

Hi, where in Brighton is your plot ? Im the head gardener for the rockery opposite preston park if you're ever around and want a tour of the garden.

This time of year, you really need to play it by ear. Stay off when it's wet and once it dries out a bit, dig it over ready for spring. If you can, some well rotted manure will help a lot.

Hi Andy_J, my plot is on Whitehawk Hill so quite exposed. Hence why i'm nervous about turning it over too soon as i fear the topsoil will be washed and/or blown away! Thanks for the offer of a tour & advice, think i'll start gathering some leaves for mulching & contact 'hoof power' for some muck! Guess i'm just being impatient & want to make this a success!! Although, maybe now might be a good time to organise the shed?

Welcome to the vine Jo - and it is too wet and windy to do too much on the plot! At least that is what I keep telling myself every time I think I should go to my allotment!

I think my enthusiasm for it actually being mine keeps forgetting the fact the weather is stinky at the mo! Think i might start organising the shed & writing lists... Lists of seeds, stuff to buy, jobs... Lists of lists! Goodness me. I'm also spending a fair amount of time on Youtube, there's so much to learn about growing!

Not wishing to dampen your enthusiasm, but when you say you were the co-worker on this plot but now the tenant has given up, are you officially now the tenant? Has this gone through your powers that be? I only ask as we had a thread running here a little while back where there was confusion about who was the actual tenant of a plot. I hate to think of you working hard on your plot, when you can get on it, only to find it has been re-let to someone else.

Hi WendyC - thanks for thinking of me! But i am officially the tenant (after a rather long process) I went on the waiting list about 6 months after my friend did (she was the old tenant), so my name came up around the time she'd given up so we simply swapped the contract over. The council took a while but it was an unusual case for them, not normal policy etc etc. Having waited 4 yrs for a plot i ensured everything was watertight!

Welcome for a little further south....Have a great look around here at others blogs for their plots. You'll get loads of tips. All of them different.

You take a roll through, pick up all the things that seem to suit you, your abilities and likes, and then do that. Sometimes later on you feel like trying something different. Plenty of scope in here I find.
