Hello and welcome! I'm from Kimmy Park Living in Aberdeenshire now though...
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Well, I don't have thick arms, but can't comment on the other one!

I like Dahlias as well, but can never be bothered to dig the tubers up, and no matter how well I insulate, they ALWAYS rot for me. So, I've given up growing them really.. Do you grow them from seed?
I`ve got some seeds thru already. About 3cm at the moment. I mainly have tubers of the small growing border type-about two dozen. Also got just a few tubers of the tall varieties to try (48"). Not too keen on messing too much with garden canes for each one, but the flowers on the tall varieties look marvellous in the photos on the packet.

Welcome. I like Dahlias as well, I had a dozen or so different large-flowered ones in my last garden. Since moving here to Essex I haven't rebuilt yet, just a couple of pom-pom types.

I usually dig some up and leave some in the ground, then divide whatever survives in the spring.

I grew some large-flowered ones a few years back from seed I bought at a gardening show. They grew as easily as the bedding types. They were all decorative although no stunning new varieties; mostly singles, which the bees love.
