Hi all,

Another Yorkshire lad here (seems there's a few based on another introduction thread). This is the start of my second year gardening at home ... and yes, it's all in containers

Last year it was mostly "traditional" veggies but with a good sprinkling of the less common crops too in my little back yard, but I'm changing all that this year. Figured it might be useful to get myself signed up on a forum for the odd bit of guidance as the year unfolds, and this seems a friendly place to be

I also used to grow in pots and any container I could get my hands on then but since then we've filled in the pond and made 3 beds, I've still got a fair bit in pots though.

Absolutely! The plan for this year is more densely/cleverly arranged containers to open up a bit more space for other garden use. Total plot size is 4m x 8m, and to start off with there is a shed, rotary airer, BBQ, 4 person patio furniture and potting bench.

In the remaining space I'm going for 8 small fruit trees, 10 fruit bushes, 4 vines, 10 herbs (mostly perennial), plus "non-traditional" roots, leaves, edible flowers and a bucket load of other stuff - kind of like forest gardening but in containers. It works on paper so far, and I'll be doing a kind of mock up over the next couple of weeks with existing plants and empty pots. The two biggest challenges are a lack of knowledge on certain items (hence being here), and the garden being North facing. Not too much of a problem March to September as I have "zones" for different plants based on sunlight, but November to January I get no direct sunlight at all.

Last year I had to choose between rotary airer and furniture, and couldn't sit out when the laundry was out This year with a bit of redesigning I reckon I can have both, plus around 50 different edibles and a few ornamentals too

I prefer the term "alternative"

eg: Liquid Gold; Humanure; dog poo composting; no dig; slug soup; surface composting; lasagne beds. That'll do you for now
