Got my new allotment

Hello all

I'm stu from Portsmouth UK, I have just started renting a plot sadly it's a tiny plot compared to all the others. The good news is: it will be easily manageable and only cost me £13.

I don't have a green house and planning this year to plant seeds direct or purchase plants from the local garden centre. I'm gardening with my 2 girls so they have are chosen what we are going to grow:

Beef tomatoes (they had them on holiday)
Cucumber
Lettuce
Radish
Peppers
Chilli (these are for me)
Potatoes
Beans of some sort
Apple tree!!! Not sure I have the space but my 7 year old told me it is important to eat fruit!

Going to take it easy this year, the gent next to me told me not to use raised beds as not enough room I have dug it all over in the autumn.

Really looking forward to spring and getting out there with the kids while they are still interested.

Welcome to the vine Stu. If you haven't got a GH check the varieties of seeds you get are suitable for growing outdoors, cucumbers for instance come in both outdoor and indoor varieties. If you just grow one chilli plant it may be best inside on your kitchen window, other grapes may do ok with peppers and chillies outdoors but they really need a very warm spot or a very sunny wall.

Not sure about the argument that small spaces and raised beds don't go together. There was a small corner plot on a site I knew, the plot holder had raised beds and they were very productive. Her theory was that she could fit more plants in because she didn't need rows and culd reach everywhere to weed and water without going onto the bed.

I am sure that you will get loads of advice from people here but I would say make your own mind up.

I like the idea of raised beds they look a lot tidier and fit into my clean and tidy nature. I like the look of Choppers new allotment (need to do a lot of work to make mine look like that).

When you say your plot is tiny - how tiny?

Welcome to the vine Stu........as already mentioned, you'll need to check your Toms for outdoor varieties. Peppers & Chiilis really need to be grown indoors. If I was you, I would make 1 raised bed say 3ft x 3ft divide it into 9 sq ft beds as the above thread & give it to your girls to grow in. They can then get personal satisfaction of growing their own veg & will be able to have 9 different types of veg if they wish:
e.g per sq ft - 9 onions, 9 beetroot, 1 Brassica, Poss 4 Sweetcorn, 1 Tom (Outdoor Girl- Bush Variety), Beans up a trellis (use 3 squares), 16 Radish.

These are just examples of what your girls could grow in a 9 sq ft area.

1.5 rods is about a third of the size of mine, so yes you'll be able to grow plenty on there matey. Only thing I'd recommend is to not waste space by growing things that are already cheap in the shops, such as onions and potatoes, although DO grow a few early (new) potatoes, as they're not always so cheap.
