Will read your blog later, but for starters, give us a clue as to your favourite (non-commercial) varieties
          Hi Tripmeup

For my sins I have not tried too many heritage tomatoes. I did get some sent from New Zeeland to me which were a very old Guernsey variety(I am from there) from the 40s or 50s and I could not see any record of then in the UK. They looked exactly like Tigerella. I fact I would have sworn they were the same, even the taste. So the modern Tigerella probably stems from them.

With a title like tomato king I know i should be trying all types, but if you go on any US tomato forum they are crazy about heritage tomatoes, Tomatoville.com is the best but they tend to over complicate things in the states, ask a question on there and you will get 50 answers on the same subject, but all good fun.

My favourite tomato at the moment is a commercial variety that I buy from a local French garden centre. Marmand is a classic beefsteak full of flavour, however the ones I have grown are not the classic shape as shown in the picture, they are large and very round and very firm, just like an oversized normal tomato. I must check if there are other types of Marmand.

Now I have more time I will have to experiment a little more and not play it safe.

              Hi Stella

You certainly are a world away from us in little old Brittany, but the sun is shinning today so lets hope spring has finally sprung!

Ooh haven't seen you for ages TK - welcome back. My favourite tomato is any one I can get to fruit these days
Merely due to my own incompetence.

Mr TK, I am growing Marmand this year too. You certainly have elevated my expectations.
While wearing your night clothes, plant cucumbers on the 1st May before the sun comes up, and they will not be attacked by bugs.

I had a strange experience with Marmande last year. I placed a 4 module of them on the poly bed and forgot about them. The resulting toms were hoooge.........the roots had gone through the module into the poly bed.............

I too have a Marmande seedling growing on a window sill somewhere.
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....
