Hello everyone,

I've been moving house too often in the past few years to grow much. Now am settled until at least October of this year and so I've started planting.

I only have limited soil area to grow in, so am planning to grow pack choy/spinach and later kale in the ground, lettuce in grow bags, and dwarf bell peppers in pots on the patio. I also have spring onions and radishes started off in pots on the patio at the moment.

I'm also thinking of growing courgettes if I can work out how to fit one in.

Growing in the South of England (my last allotment was in Yorkshire) so hoping for more success with the bell peppers than I've had previously.

I grow my spare courgettes in redundant recycling boxes and i got nearly as many from the boxes as I did from those in the ground, just had to keep an eye on the watering.

Does anyone have any recommendations for particularly prolific courgette plant (or a similar summer squash). I'll probably try one in the ground and one or two in containers. I've found some all green bush seeds among my old seed packets that should still be growable, but if I'm only going to plant one in the ground I want to make sure its very prolific.

I have two options available, either a bush type that won't take over the garden, or if I plant it at the far end of the flower bed right next to the patio, I could train the leaves up the fence surrounding the patio which has wire pinned to it for roses, in which case a long trailing type would work.

Hello and welcome to the wonderful Vine.
Anyone nuts enough to request prolific courgettes will fit in very well. I like genovese (green) and jemmer (yellow) both bush, and so prolific that despite being planted straight into unimproved clay subsoil in an ex-field I ripped out two plants (leaving just four) after a month. My notes for that year say FOUR IS ENOUGH!
Needless to say I have sown eight this year ...

Welcome to the forum. i take it your not a novice going by your posts? Is butternut a summer squash?? Thats nice!

No I've had an allotment twice in the past but never for longer than two seasons before we moved. I think butternut squash is more an autumn or winter squash, not 100% sure though. I tried growing them once but the seedlings never got going properly.

Thanks Pyrenees, I'll look into these, I notice they've got both varieties at moreveg so I'll probably get some from there as very cheap. Would now be a good time to start both of these off in small pots in the house?
