  • I'm a bit late getting started.

    Hello!

My guess is that I'm a bit older than most new gardeners. The reason I'm guessing is that I don't know any other gardeners.

So far this season I've raised a fine crop of compost material interspersed with some tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, and okra. The bush bean plants are all but gone due to a hungry rabbit.

I'm planning to start a crop of a few fall vegetables soon without so many weeds. I lost control of the weeds and I don't want that to happen again. Way too much work getting them under control.

I also have some blueberry bushes, raspberry briars, and fruit trees that are all doing quite well at this point.

Anyway, this looks like a good site on the subject so I hope I fit in.

Welcome to the vine DWS. Gardening is a hobby you can take up at any age, and many folk don't start till they retire, so you're not alone there
From your post I'm guessing that maybe you're in North America somewhere, or else you're an ex-pat living here in the UK. If you put your location in your profile it will show up on your posts. We're a nosy lot and like to know what part of the world everyone's in.

you might have left it too late for this year, but I don't know your climate. In the UK our autumn (Fall) veggies (eg pumpkins, sprouts, winter cabbage, kale) are sown in April/May, then planted out when space permits in July (ish).
Growth slows down considerably during Aug/Sept when daylight length is decreasing
