  • Hi Everyone, complete novice here :-)

    Hi Everyone,

My partner and I recently got an allotment in Gloucestershire. We were very lucky in we didnt have to wait for a plot, a new development of houses had been built and with it 20 MASSIVE plots.
Ours has never been grown on before but was waist high with weeds so we have spent two months digging and digging and digging. We have done half the plot now and are hoping to get the rest done this year.
Our plan was to dig it all up, get some manure from our farmer friend and then rotivate it all together - cover what we dont use over winter and then hit the ground running next year.
We are also thinking of getting some chickens (we have all the books, but any first hand experience would also be welcome)
Any advice or helpful tips to starting out would be welcomed! Looking forward to soaking up all the knowledge from you lovely people

    Hello,

I'm a new poster too so welcome!

I'll offer you one bit of advice which might save you grief. Check all those weeds for Bindweed (DEVILS ROOT!!!) IF you have that do not rotivate the area.... Bindweed has been the bane of my life (along with lambs quarters) since taking on my allotment, if you cut the roots of BW each tiny bit can form a new plant, new roots etc....

I dug up over 20 big buckets last year when clearing and I'm still getting it everywhere!!!

    GOOD LUCK!!

PS Take some pics of the lottie, It's always nice to see the change when you look back

You could also sow some green manure to cover some of it over winter. Don't forget to plant winter onion sets and garlic, try to get some purple sprouting broccoli plants too. You can still sow some of the winter cabbages.

Hello PL & welcome to the vine. I'm sure you have noticed the section dedicated to keeping chooks.

Thanks everyone, I am excited to be here! Thanks for the advice as well, it's really is welcome! They have all gone down in the allotment journal . My Dad used to talk about bindweed being an absolute pain in the a**e, I will have a look when I get down there tonight. Glad to hear we still have time to get something planted as well! Spur us on to "just keep digging, just keep diggingggg"

I'm guessing that 'Just keep Digging' is to be sung to the tune of 'Just Keep Swimming' as sung by Dory!
