  • Newbie from Utah

    Hello everyone.

I'm new here and straight out of the gate I fear I made a serious mistake... I've been trying to get for awhile now (it's not available in the US, yet) and I came across this site and saw someone had it, and so I joined and PM'ed them in regards to obtaining plant cuttings/seeds. In further browsing this site I discovered that such activity is considered a no-no. My apologies on that.

Anyways, a little about me: I live in Utah in the United States and enjoy gardening and the outdoors. I like historic preservation and restoration, traditional building and crafting skills and tools, and so forth.

I hope I'm not too far out of place here, what with being across the pond from you guys. This does look like a wonderful place to learn, grow, and share in a wealth of knowledge and experience. I hope to help contribute and become a part of this community.

Hello Onsdag and welcome to the Grapevine.
We welcome members from anywhere in the world - you're not the first from across the Pond.
I'm curious as to what plants/seeds you want - do tell

Welcome to the vine Onsdag. (I once travelled across Utah on the San Francisco Zephyr - trip of a lifetime ) You may need to translate some of the terminologies (fluid measures, temperatures, metric measurements) and the seasons are different too - but it is always great to learn from each other
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Hello Veggiechicken and thanks for the warm welcome!

The answer to your question I suppose is two-fold...

In regards to what I eluded to in the previous post, it is Redlove apple trees. They are thus far only available in Europe/UK and messages to Lubera/Markus Kobelt have been returned saying that it may be several years before they start marketing it to the U.S. Oddly enough, even though gardening requires patience and I am willing to wait... I am also impatient and wish I could have them available now.

The other part to that question is that I am interested in a lot of plants/seeds and I have a document typed up of what all I have available and what I am looking for. I hesitate to post it yet as I have not met the criteria for seed/plant swapping, but if you're really interested in everything I have and/or am looking for I could post it for informational purposes only.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes! Yes, the metric and other conversions will require some translating... but fortunately we have great technologies right at our fingertips to make this a breeze.

Hello Onsdag & welcome to the vine. I think one of the problems that may be encountered re the seed swap is the SAE (Stamped Addressed Envelope). It would not not be acceptable for either parties across the pond to send SAE as the stamp (postage/shipping) would not be legal in that country................hope that makes sense.

I'm not sure I understand... Is this a recent development? I don't recall ever having an issue with postage to/from across the pond, but granted it has been awhile since I last did this. Does this affect only self-stamped envelopes? Or all postage?

What we tend to do over in the UK is if a person requests seeds they would send an envelope, in that envelope is an empty envelope with postage attached (SAE). This has the senders address on it.............On reading that, it makes us sound barking mad.................

Ahh... so there wouldn't be any issue if I were to pay someone (say with Paypal) to have them post the seeds to me? It's just an issue with sending a self-addressed envelope because my stamps aren't legal in other countries?

Not a bad idea, I didn't think of using the likes of Paypal.

Hi Onsdag and welcome. Another problem of course is the customs implications of importing cuttings, etc into the us. I don't know what its like over there, but unregulated importation of things like that from outside of Europe is illegal in the uk I believe.
