Hi all, just thought I'd introduce myself.
I've had an allotment on a private site since April this year but that hasn't really worked out. I think it was a combination of the fact that the plot had been vacant for over two years and the weeds were already waist high and it was a 15-20min drive from where I live. I did manage to get a few beds of potatoes and one of onions planted but the whole site got hit with potato blight and so I lost my spuds
I really enjoyed the time I spent on the allotment this year even though the actual growing didn't go according to plan! I had planned on blitzing the plot this winter and getting ahead of the weeds for next years planting season but then something even better has come along.....
My local council have at long last created some allotments for its residents! I am now the proud owner of a full plot (8m x 12m) just 10mins walk from my house. The contractors are due to finish this Friday but we don't have a date from the council yet as to when we will actually get on site, I can't wait Needless to say I will be giving up the private allotment as the council one will be a fifth of the price (£40 max).
As the local "soil" is heavy clay I plan to put in all raised beds, this way I will have something decent to plant in next spring and avoid any potential flooding in the winter (or is that summer!). I'm hoping to have at least 4 of the 8 raised beds up and running for March/April and the rest will be built and ready for the following year. I'm also intending to have about a quarter of my plot as a wildlife/wild flower area.
I only just got the veg-growing bug this year so I'm a total newbie, any/all advice will be gratefully received.
John.
