Hello everyone!
I've already posted (and got excellent replies) to my SOS here, but I thought I'd better come and introduce myself properly too.
I've just taken on a plot just around the corner from house, having applied a couple of weeks ago thinking "I fancy it, but it'll probably have a long waiting list".
Not so. If anyone in the Wanstead/Redbridge area is looking for a plot: they have several.
I have fancied an allotment for some time, but have done the usual London thing of moving frequently and not being anywhere long enough. I moved to Wanstead in November, and I'm staying! So it was time.
The plot itself is big and messy. I'm intrigued as to what happened with previous plot-holders, because it looks like they just walked away last Summer, leaving A LOT of stuff behind (I have found 3 shovels, 4 bins, lots of boxes, an incinerator bin, 6 pallets ... so far). I hope it isn't a sad story!
Anyway, I'm a novice but not entirely new. I always grew up with big gardens and a bit of veg growing - and a Grandad who has turned his whole garden over to fruit/veg (and always demanded Granddaughter's help, of course). I also kept a veg patch a few years ago. Which is to say I don't really know what I'm doing, but I know enough to understand it will be a lot of hard work!
In the past I have successfully grown runner beans and tomatoes, so am keen to do some of those, and I'd quite like to get some raspberries in because I'm told they would fruit next year.
I'm lucky to have quite a bit of help too. It'll mostly be me working the plot, but my flatmate and several friends are all very interested so I will be recruiting them (or else bribing them with nice cakes & beer) to help me with some of the big projects.
