Hello from Rutland!

Hello all!

Where to start...? Well, I won't go too far back as it's probably unnecessary! I used to live in a third floor flat with a tiny balcony. To the rear of my flat was a whole load of allotments, and directly opposite my flat was a bungalow with a VERY well kept garden complete with vegetable patch. Oh how I wanted to grow my own food! On my balcony I grew some strawberries and broad beans, but nothing more.

Last June I moved into a little one bed house with a decent sized but somewhat overgrown garden. My health is not the best, and it has taken me up until now to clear the garden, including the removal of several small trees, just doing a little at a time. I am finally at a stage where I can start actually GROWING SOMETHING! Yay!

I will no doubt have lots of questions, and will probably make lots of mistakes, but I can't wait!

I look forward to having a look around the forums and will post pictures shortly if newbies are allowed to post pictures?

Wow, thank you very much for the warm welcome! I wasn't expecting so many replies so soon - I thought you'd all be outside in the garden!

I already have my first question... Well two questions actually;

How tall will Runner Beans grow? and..

How tall will edible and sweet peas grow?


My intention is to make a wigwam (perhaps upside down to save space) for the runner beans, and to make a sort of zigzag along a boarder bed using canes and netting for the sweet peas and edible peas to climb up together, but I don't know how long the canes need to be. I have some 6ft ones that I intended on using for the peas (5ft when pushed in the ground I suppose?) and some longer ones that I was planning on using for the runner beans but just wanted to check that that would be the right way around!?

Thanks for posting the photos you've made a huge difference to your garden congrats

If I was you I wouldn't grow sweet peas and edible peas next to each other they're far to easy to get mixed up so have those on separate wigwams or frames. As for pea and bean height i let mine grow to 6ft tall because I can't reach any higher without having to stand on something.
