  • Hello from Manchester

    Hello from Manchester!

I've been growing for a few years now in an urban environment (mainly indoor and outdoor container growing). Looking forward to getting involved.

Hello Dan and welcome to the vine. There are a few growers on here that only grow in pots so you won't be alone what are you hoping to grow this year?

          Hey Scarlet, thanks very much!

I've been quite tame so far this year. I started a few vegetables from seed at the start of april (radishes, turnips, beetroot and spring onions) and they're doing quote well . I've also got two dwarf tomato plants (F1 Totems) doing quite nicely on the balcony. I've just a few days ago put some seed potatoes into grow bags too.

I've also bought a young blueberry bush so will see how that goes!

          How about yourself?

Can I tempt you to grow some courgettes or kale? I seem to have a weakness for growing them to excess and like everyone else to join me

Like VC I grow kale as a cabbage substitute and they are handy through the winter. One in a pot on your balcony might do well, something like a Dwarf Green.
                Other than that Helllllooooooooo!
I grow (well sometimes I manage to get something edible) in very small raised beds, pots, tyres, wall baskets etc.
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

Hello and welcome to the vine Dan I started out by growing only in pots hence my user name but luckily we had a pond to fill in and a lawn I could dig up growing space, but its surprising how much you can grow in containers so long as you water and feed well.

I did actually try to grow some courgettes in a pot last year, but it didn't work. They flowered but no courgettes I think the pot may not have been deep enough.

And kale I've never tried but I'll give it a go! I'm going to put in a big seed order ready for the hot summer weather. Any recommendations about looking after it?

Well I recommend some plant already made like tomato, cucumber, peppers. Courgette a bit late but considered this year you can get away with them. But first of all get your name in a list for an allotment it will take few year but at least you don't waste time
