  • Hi all

    Hi all,

I discovered this forum last night and ended up staying up into the early hours reading through lots of the threads on here. It looks like i will find all the information on here for all the plans i have for the future, from finishing my polytunnel build and chichken coop through to planting a fruit orchard.

For about the last 2 years i have been building a polytunnel (probably the longest polytunnel build in history?!). Along the way certain aspects of the build (and life) have delayed the schedule but it is now petty close to being able to put the cover over the frame. I just have to finish up the base rails and do the last few bits to the door frames. At the moment i am waiting for the weather to change and for a nice high pressure to come and sit over west wales so i know i have a few nice non-windy days so i can think about getting it finished and getting the cover on.

While waiting for the weather i decided it would be a good idea to get the raised beds built before having to work in the hot conditions so that is what i have been upto today, and over the weekend i built a couple of outside raised beds. I originally planned for the beds to be 27" high but while building the outside beds i realised that would be too high so decided that 18" would be more than enough, this meant that i have a fair bit of extra wood for building more outside beds.

In total there will be 3 raised beds inside the polytunnel, each 4ft wide and 50ft long. Down the left hande wide of the tunnel i plan to have an aquaponics system fed from a 8000l fish pond situated behind the polytunnel. This will hopefully be built laer in the year or next year depending how funds and time go this year.

I have already sunk the sump tank (1000l IBC) into the ground at the bottom of the tunnel along with 2 25mm return lines from the sump to where the fish pond will be situated, and there are 3 25mm pipes coming from where the fish pond will be to feed the aquaponic grow beds.

Each of the raised beds has a 25mm pipe going to the top of it that will be split so each bed will have 2 50ft soaker hoses running down their length.

While i had the mini digger in to put the pipe work under ground i also laid pipe work so there is a water feed at each end of the tunnel, along with electric and while i was at it i laid in around 500 - 600 feet of 25mm pipe in 5 seperate loops to be used for under floor heating that i plan to run off of a log burner (possibly a rocket stove) in the winter months.

Im sure there is alot more i have forgottne but im sure i can fill you all in as we go!

Below are a few pics of how she is looking as of today.

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated

    Cheers

Just a few more pics including one of the frame i have started to build for the chicken coop. Its about 14ft by 14ft and will be split into 4 seperate coops inside, all with their own seperate outside runs. Im hoping it will be big enough for around 60 chickens eventually.

I plan to get 12 laying chickens this year, will probably be a mixed flock. Then next year i want to have a flock of around 15 for eating. The 2 other runs will be used to bring up the young birds until they can join the main flock and so cockerals can be kept on their own.

    Cheers

Hi and welcome to the vine. That's a fantastic growing facility you've been building! What sort of crops will you be growing there once it's all done?

          Hi all,

          Cheers for the welcome

2 of the beds are planned for veggies, i have a 50ft by 25ft fishing net ready to be hung over the central walkway to be used as a trellis for things like tomatos, peppers, chillis, beans and peas. Then really just a mixed array of other veg, the wife is mainly in charge of this side of things!

The bed on the right handside of the tunnel is for fruits. I plan to have 9 grape vines of different varieties (i enjoy wine making) along with the 40 starwberry plants i have ready to go in. I would also like to try some kiwi vines along with a few odd trees like lemons, peaches, fig and possibly a few others.

          Cheers

                              Hi all,

Thanks again everyone for the warm welcome.

I managed to build another bed today so thats 2 down and 1 to go. Tomorrow i have to dig a few holes but im hoping to build the 3rd bed on thursday.

Today the wife finished filling one of the outside beds and started forking in some compost, so we can now start planting it up over the next few days.

                              Cheers
