Hi everyone,
I'm Pete, and completely new to gardening/growing of any sort really, but having just 'acquired' an allotment plot recently, I'm learning fast!
I'm sharing the plot with my wife's uncle who is keeping poultry, we are currently in the process of building runs and that for them, beg, borrowing, and not quite stealing but you know what I mean, the various bits and bobs needed for this. I have somehow got hold of an old chicken coop, in good condition, for free, so that's a big help!
I'm going to be growing, or at least trying my best to - I have already dug two beds over, and managed to get some spuds variety unknown, but they were given to me by someone I know on the allotment, and also some cabbage, again, unknown variety.
The potatoes are already coming through, after a couple of weeks in the ground, so that's quite exciting for a novice, and the cabbages are looking okay, after only a few days in - I have been told, I'll need to net these though, but having a look at the price of netting, I was quite shocked - I'm sure you more experienced growers, will know the best and cheapest way to help me here?
Our plot is on a south facing slope (which is good?), has just had the surface 'scraped' to clear it of weeds - but I am finding out as I prep beds, that our plot must have been everyone else's tip! Bricks, bottles, carpets, anything anyone on the allotments wanted to get rid of has ended up here over time!
I have my work cut out, but I'm not afraid of that...
I'll be asking loads of questions no doubt, so please be gentle with me!
