Hi and welcome to the vine

You say it will be a long process for you, but I am not sure what it is in regard to

If you have financial restraints - become a skip diver, don't be afraid to ask anyone if you can have stuff they are throwing out/ hoarding etc. Pallets are great for almost everything, old debris net to protect crops, butter tubs for growing seedlings, milk bottles can become self watering pots the list is endless.

If you have time restraints - being your back garden it is surprisingly easy to nip out for 10 mins here and 15 mins there and it really does make a difference.

If you have size restraints - it is surprising just how much you can squeeze in when you want too. There are usually ways round things like climbing beans rather than dwarf etc. etc.

If you have knowledge restraints - stick around and have a good mooch there is loads of advice and tips. Also don't be afraid to ask no matter how simple or daft you might think it is. They are a great bunch here.

Lastly my biggest tip for container growing would be slow release fertilser. I am rubbish at frequently doing liquid feeds and tried s.r.f. and it made so much difference.

        Good luck

Hi again, and to everyone else who has said hello.

Had a busy day today so not done much yet just pricing up some containers etc.

Restraint wise, its all down to knowledge at the moment, or should i say lack of it. I mean i feel i know less about it than i should know, the simplest of things, i mustn't have been listening in school when we covered plants. I was reading a few posts yesterday and even things like 'Sow', is that planting them? 'Thinning the carrots' i need to learn everything but im sure i will with the good advice on here and a bit of learning from my mistakes.

                Thank you for the support

                Mike

You've got plenty of time to learn, there's not too much happening growing wise at this time of year. The vine is a wonderful source of information, you may find though that the search function isn't too helpful at times and you might have better luck with searching the forum from Google, e.g. enter the following search into Google

                    growing carrots site:growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine

Of course, just a Google search on growing carrots will bring you hundreds of results, I'd restrict it to U.K. results though as they will be more relevant. YouTube is also a really good resource. If you go to Youtube and type allotment into the search box, you'll get loads of allotment gardening channels including lots in this country which you can sit and watch for hours and are very informative (I don't think any of our grapes have a YouTube channel - yet, VCTV anyone? )
Posted on an iPad so apologies for any randomly auto-corrected gobbledegook

Can you imagine VCTV I'd collapse in a fit of giggles and tell everyone what it was like to live in a shoebox, instead of how to grow carrots
I think Mike would learn more with someone who knows what they're talking about

After tasting you first freshly pulled carrot either eaten raw or cooked soon after you will never want ot go back to the orange soap bars sold in the supermarket.

That's what home/allotment growing is all about..............freshness and taste.

Doesn't matter whether you grow organically or not, freshness is the key.

Those boxes look fantastic and would lend themselves very well to being made from pallet wood. Because pallet wood is a bit thinner and is not tongued and grooved they would probably need a liner of some description though. Anything not water permeable like bin bags or plastic stapled to the inside would do.Doesn't even have to be black as its not seen and won't degrade through light.

Sorry for waffling, Enjoy your time on the Vine but more importantly enjoy your first home grown carrot!

Welcome to the Vine Mike, one thing I would sugest is keep a garden diary, or record book to keep track of work,(and this is a thing I should be doing also) and just another thing, Sow=to scatter or plant seed.
Sewing usualy followed by box= a good place to keep your money, wives rarly go into them
                            All the best to you
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Hello and a very warm welcome to the Vine Mike I don't believe anyone to be born a gardener, we all learn over time and from our mistakes, but it's a great help to have someone to ask and everyone on here is eager to help

                                Hi all,

Wow, didn't realise it was that long ago i joined the forum and posted this first post.

Well, i haven't sewed a seed yet or grew anything, things kind of took over when we moved house, got in, you know how it is, once you're in for a week, you realise how much needs doing. Anyway, back when i posted this i applied for an allotment space, i was told it takes years for a space to come available, but i got a phone call this week that i may have dropped lucky as somethings come up. Haven't been to see it yet, am waiting for another call next week to go down. Excited

The garden idea went out of the window as we decided to gut the whole lot that was here (it was like a forest) and flatten the lot for a nice space for the dogs. Plus, i was always concerned about keeping dog urine away from anything we tried to grow.
