Just signed up and so thought I'd say hello. Second season growing fruit & veg and so very much a beginner. Navigating an ongoing battle between space for flowers & fruit/veg as love both. On clay in Herts with Roman fish ponds around us, so a mix between quite wet but dries out v quickly as they drain well. Minot sure if we are wet or dry soil! Have been focussing on improving soil and built a greenhouse last spring so this is first season I can do 'properly'. Fell into trap of growing lots of stuff enthusiastically that we never ate. We never eat much salad & it turns out we don't even when we grow it.... So it was a bit of an ornamental veg plot in some cases!!

You are not alone in having too much........the first time I tried lettuce I assumed that I should use the whole packet............green floppy leaves still make me shudder!

This site is brilliant for both novice and experienced growers as the help and advice is worth it's weight in gold.

And if you want you could join in with the various fun and games that are an almost constant feature.

Hi, Anna, and welcome to the vine. I have to juggle flowers and veg too. I love sweet peas, but love runner beans too, so it's a difficult decision as to which I give the most space to. I also don't care much for leafy salad, but love raw cabbage and kale, so grow that instead.

We love to see pics of people's plots. Got any of yours?

Hi Anna,I've got some ornamental lettuce growing too I grow everything in my garden,flowers in the same pot with fruit or veg is a great for the bees & for confusing the pests with their scents. Welcome to the vine!

Presumably the ornamental lettuce were also used as a green manure for compost or soil improvement, so nothing wasted.

Having a green house will make a massive difference to what you can achieve this year, so best of luck.

I try to just grow a little bit of lots of things, then there's nothing wasted if we don't like it or if its all ready at the same time!
