  • Hello All

    Hi Everyone;
    My name is Sam, I have taken on an allotment as part of my job with a family centre. I've never done this kind of thing before! Gardening to me has been mowing the lawn and picking up the dog mess. So I've been thrown in at the deep end a little!!

    We have a pretty large plot. The only problem is...it's a right mess!!! I've made a good start at clearing some of the mess (which included a tipped over porta-potty), I've burnt a lot of the brambles, branches, twigs and dead grass (still a lot to go). I've set up a water container and 2 compost bins, made a start with one of the bins but due to my lack of knowledge...put brambles in it DOH!!

    There is still a lot to do before I even get to turning over the ground! i'll upload some pictures when I can.

    I just wanted to say hello to my new community

    Sam

    Hiya Sam & welcome to the Jungle, looks like you are well on the way to having it cleared in time for some planting. Tatties are usually a good crop to break the soil up & will be due to go in next month. Please feel free to join us here http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...dar_87848.html & watch your plot transform over the months.

            Hello Sam and welcome to the vine,sounds like you been very busy already,the onlny advice i can give at this moment in time is,for this year,keep it to simple growing,like toms lettuce,cue,spuds,beetroot,this will be a lot easier to cope with,plus something for those that are sharing to take home and eat.good luck,

                        Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I haven't had a chance to get down the allotment since Friday...living in Wales, the weather is a constant battle, rain, rain everywhere.

                        To answer your question veggiechicken. I'm in charge of the plot and will be doing as much work down there as I can but I do have some volunteers who are willing to get stuck in. I run a parent and toddler group at the centre, for Dads so the are my main source of help.

                            Hello Sam and welcome to the Vine.

                            Well done you on what you have already achieved as getting a site ready can be very daunting.

                            My snippet of advice would be to just clear a small area to start with so you can feel chuffed at yourself for being able to get some easy seeds in. The rest will always follow in due course.
