Hi, been browsing for a while, have just started with a raised bed but its going to be quite expensive to fill! have a few quid set aside to buy a greenhouse, (�300), tesco where doing an 8' by 6' foot one but i think its gone up in price

Sure someone will be along shortly with info on a GH at a decent price. Do you not have any home made compost to fill your raised bed? Or know anyone with some going begging? Also you could source 'free' manure. Cardboard, newspapers, grass cuttings etc all good too

In regards to a gh why not go for a secondhand one - freecycle or fleabay, usually you need to collect and dismantle.

Then in regards to your bed - do you have any mushroom growers - spent compost is great. As has been previously mentioned you can fill with the usual stuff that would go in a compost bin.

Hello OG & welcome to the Jungle. B4Q have just had a sale on their greenhouses, it may be worth an ask. You may have to source some glass or polycarb but all in all will give you some cash towards filling the bed.

How big is the raised bed? If its on soil you don't have to fill it all immediately but can top it up over a couple of years.

If you find a local stables they usually let you take away manure for free....go for the black, non-smelly stuff deep in the middle of the pile which is what we call 'well rotted'. When I go, I put one of those square yard builders sacks in the boot (�5 from jewsons builders merchants) and a couple of those plastic trug buckets. Leave the sack in the car and trundle back and forth with trugfuls of manure to fill it. You'll have enough for your raised bed within the hour.

We get free horse muck - we 'just' have to collect it from 20 mins away, about which MrPP moans muchly.
We freecycled a greenhouse away a few years ago (it was huge in a tiny garden and was far too tempting as target practice from the park at the back, before anyone jumps on me for giving away a greenhouse!!)
