Who have you approached so far? The local council? You are unlikely to get one straight away although waiting lists appear to be shorter than they were about 5 years ago.

Have you been to the allotment site and spoken to anyone? Is there a sitehut? Or a notice board with contacts?
Sometimes, just going there and asking about any plots coming vacant - especially if you don't mind abut the condition, can help.

To be honest a 2 year wait isn't that bad. Get yourself on the list if you aren't already. Not knowing the area, are there several allotments sites? If you can be flexible as to which site you want that will improve your chances.
try visiting any of your preferred sites and ask directly, someone on here has got a share in one using that method.
As far as private ones go, you are probably best asking locally. Looking on Google maps can reveal where there are allotments. Good luck.

I'm confused now as there seem to be two threads running for the same member asking the same question. Could a friendly mod please merge them. Just found I've repeated myself.

Keep nagging the council, they don't always update their list regularly, and plots are untended etc, if you spot any unattended/ neglected bring it their attention!

Visit the allotments at the weekend, when there should be someone around. Just go and chat, make yourself known, you have more chance that way than being a name on a list.

Is that land share thing still going....the hugh furry wotsit one?
I know a lady who gave a chap the key to her 200ft garden in return for a veg box every now and again. They made a real go of it.

Also, find out when lottie rents are due.
There'll be a round of evictions and free plots straight after...thats a good time to be badgering for a plot!

Are there any other potential growing areas in your neighbourhood? My Second lottie was behind a Methodist Church, just a patch of round that they were going to have to try and control the weeds on giving them more work and possible more expense. They were happy to rent it out as less work for them and a couple of extra pounds in the kitty a year. I did only have access to water once a week but filled up my butts at each opportunity.

As Muddled said there is the land share - however you don't just have to sign up to the HFW one. If you're a member of a church/faith group then they may know of someone in the congregation needing help with garden and willing to trade access for vg/flowers/chats over cups of tea. you can also try community centres etc to see if the people running them can put you in touch with someone - of course this route may get susspicious looks if they don't already know you.
