I had planned to stick the water butt at the other end of the garden to get the run off from the workshop.

Your soil does look clayey (is that a word?) mine is here, too.
I've added plenty of cow manure and many barrow loads of homemade garden compost, dug it all in and hoping that I get some decent results!
All that is needed now is for it to warm up a little!

Not so many cows locally but plenty of horses, I'm hoping their doings will suffice.

What a great view - DO let it distract you. There is nothing quite like sitting and looking and pondering while your back and arms recover from some hard graft
