Hi Everyone,

Just joined the forum today but this is my second season growing veggies in my back garden. I started off last year to get the kids eating more veg, which worked, as they loved helping to grow it and especially loved eating the spinach, chard and peas. The crops this year so far have not been as successful but I am refusing to give up. I have some more seedlings on the go in hopes that it is not too late in the season to start again and replace the worst hit crops. I have been getting plenty of advice and support from my dad who I have watched (and helped) grow fruit and veg on an allotment since I was a kid. I hope my kids will develop the same love of gardening which I am now rediscovering.

Hi and welcome! You are so lucky having your dad's experience to help guide you along... hopefully as you get more settled here his advice will also help us!

As for failures this year - you'll soon see we're all in the same position this year - the total lack of both spring and summer has affected us all - but we'll all battle through!

Hi and welcome. I also grow in my back garden and am on my second year. I think we all have failures (even the more experienced growers) but as long as you are enjoying what you're doing, that's the main thing.

It's such a great example to set for kids too. Many children have never seen where fruit and vegetables come from (except out of a plastic wrapper from the supermarket) or how they grow.

My daughter enjoys helping with jobs in the garden and especially anything that gets her muddy. She loves her greens which is a step up from me when I was little and keeps asking when we can have more runner beans

You're not alone in your struggles....I suspect that very few of us are doing well this year, its been so wet and bleak!
I do think though, that seeing you re-sow and carry on undaunted is an excellent lesson for your children in resilience and (lets hope ) triumph over adversity!

Welcome along - there's plenty of good friendly advice available here. You're lucky your children enjoy helping - mine just give me a 'look' when I mention weeding / planting /sowing / growing. Bah!

If you add nitrogen rich stuff to the beds (e.g. chicken manure pellets ) the carrots will twist and fork - a pain to clean but can be a giggle when you pull up the roots.
