Hi

I am totally new to the world of growing vegetables, and would be grateful for all the help and advice that is out there.

I have bought a small greenhouse, unheated, and live just north of Edinburgh. I am alos in the process of building a couple of raised beds.

The plan is to grow a selection of vegetables and fruits predominantly from seed and would really appreciate any advice on what would best grow in Scotland, what seeds can be started off in the greenhouse and what time of year to sow the seeds in the greenhouse.

Happy to grow anything really, already have a fairly large selection of seeds.
I think to begin with something easy. Advice on how many seeds to sow, there are 4 in the household, so don't want to be growing a huge amount just to end up throwing it away, but happy to plant at different times so that there will be a supply to pick during the duration of the season.

Do you like garlic? Now is the time to think about buying the cloves to plant - and its quite easy.
Mixed salad leaves are good in the GH over winter and you can pick as many leaves as you need for a sandwich or garnish.
How big is your GH?

Garlic and Japanese overwintering onions are usually planted out in autumn to overwinter.

I know that you want to grow from seed but you could get a couple of plants of kale or chard from the garden centre to grow overwinter.

Broad beans and round peas can also be sown in October /November but you have to use varieties that are hardy enough to overwinter.

Be warned -this gardening bug is addictive and it's easy to get carried away. Many a member has grown far too many tomato plants just because we grew them from seed and didn't have the heart to compost the excess.

You've come to the right place for heaps of advice! Good luck with your growing.

I know you're impatient to get things started, but you can spend some time planning for next seasons sowing and growing.

Garlic is great and overwintering onions for starting now, as the others have said.

If your beds are to be left empty overwinter, there's always a useful crop of green manures you could grow to suppress weeds and to stop nutrients leeching out.

Anyway, before and after photos are great ~ show us your beds...!!!

Can't help with what to plant / sow now because I'm a bit of a fair weather gardener and my veggie garden is a little on the exposed side.
But in Spring I sow all seeds in my polytunnles apart from carrots which I direct sow and chilli's & tomatoes get sown in a heated propagator.
Don't worry about growing to much of something ( it will happen ) you can always give it away to friends and family or start making the huge amounts of chutney ( a couple of us do that.......OK most of us do that )
