I'm not from Devon but have three aunts that live there so I know Torbay, Okehampton and Bideford well enough as well as having helped a friend set up his organic garden in Newton Abbot many years ago.

I will say you have a substantial crop of nettles available to compost if nothing else, the footpaths are usually surrounded iirc. There must also be access to lots of lovely cow manure with straw come springtime when the sheds get cleared out.

Stick afound, it's a great place to hang out.
