I'd be really interested to hear what sort of pests etc you have different from those we have in Europe...and the main veg others grow !
Are you going to try to grow traditional British fruit and veg or traditional Japanese ones?
I'm sure there must be a few different ones?
How exciting!

I didn't do much gardening before I came to Japan. But expect a lot of the pests are the same. Last year I had a problem with aphids on my peppers and courgettes that I grew on my balcony. Slugs don't seem to be such a problem over here but caterpillars are.
I'm trying to grow a bit of everything this year and see what works. I only got the plot at the begin April but have planted out spinach and pak choy that I started in cells on my balcony. I've also put in tomatoes, peppers (sweet ones and some spicy Japanese ones called togarashi), courgettes, corn, green beans, edamame soybeans and snap endo peas. It's mostly familiar veg but the varieties are probably different.
I used to work for a Japanese car manufacturer, speaking to the trainers who came over in the early days, not that many grew vegetables, most seem to grow flowers, never thought to ask about pests to be honest.
Have you tried growing bitter melon? I tried it in the Far East a few years ago and loved it. Can't seem to buy it here so trying my hand this year. It probably won't work but here goes.
