Just joined and thought I'd say hello.
Very new to all this, I've never had a garden before so when I retired and moved up here, a garden was one of the "must haves" on my checklist - specifically so that I can try to emulate Tom Good.
On the veggie front, this year I'm trying Broad Beans (Dwarf), Green Sprouting Broccoli, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, a few Cabbages, Carrots, White and Romanesco Cauliflower, Courgettes, Leeks, Onions, lots of Parsnips, Peas, Potatoes, Runner Beans
(Dwarf), Swedes, Sweetcorn and a few Tomatoes. Oh, and I've bought a second freezer
Most of the veggies are growing nicely now so I can't have done too much wrong in the end. I'm (hopefully) learning all the time and have lots of notes to remind me what to do (and not to do) next year. for example, I think I sowed most of my seeds indoors too early and they didn't do too well so, for the time being, quite a lot of what is growing now started out as seedlings from garden centres.
As to fruit, I inherited a thicket of raspberries and a bed of strawberries from the previous owner and they did well last year. I've added supports for the raspberries so harvesting will be easier, likewise I tidied the strawberry patch and they are looking happy. I've since added some currants (black, red and white) and a blackberry and I was given a Bramley apple tree last year. In the autumn I'm considering adding a tayberry as well.
So far it's all been good fun and I haven't a clue how I found time to go to work
All the best,
Chris
