  • Hoping To Improve

Hello. I grow some vegetables and flowers in my garden in Bedfordshire. I have managed to cultivate lawns, roses, pieris, hedges, tomatoes and sweet peppers with some success. Most of my efforts with cabbages to date have either been eaten by pests or run to seed. And this year I am attempting to grow beetroot, celeriac and butternut squash for the first time.

I have already benefitted from advice that I have read in posts on these forums. So I thought that it was time I joined.

To answer, Burnie. I used to watch The Wombles and listen to Bernard Cribbins. And I acquired the nickname Tobermory for a propensity to take items deemed Beyond Economic Repair and make them work again. - Which is why I am going to persevere until I have managed to obtain permission to set an avatar for this forum and also why I have not given up on growing roses from cuttings, despite nothing but failures to date.

rose cuttings ashouldn't be too tricky - what time of year are you taking them as a matter of interest ?

I have tried working with stem cuttings around November the last two years. Followed advice on this forum and made an effort to be hygienic, keep the exposed section of the cuttings in a moist atmosphere and the section in the growing medium warm. Some of the last batch seemed to be growing until I allowed too much sunlight on them. So I intend to screen them with a bubble wrap curtain next time.
