What is this

I have a roof terrace and grow strawberries and raspberries in pots. I also have a large container with echinacea and a decorative grass but have just noticed that mushrooms are growing in part of it. When I dug it out together with some dead grass stalks I found the the growing medium had a lot of white material in it. Can anybody help me to identify this?

Hi and welcome.
Its difficult to tell from the photo what it may be. Could be mycelium spreading from the mushrooms - or the effects of the dead grass.
Personally, I'd just skim it off and remove it and cover the soil with fresh compost.

I think VC has nailed it. Think the White stuff is just what the mushrooms produce.

it is a harmless saprophytic fungus, I've found a lot of it this year in the soil as well as in potting compost.

There is absolutely no need to worry - 'ignore it' is the correct advice. This white deposit is called mycelium. It is a naturally occurring fungus whose job it is to breakdown organic material. You'll find it on bits of wood buried in the soil, on rotting straw or woody bits in compost heaps, on leafmould and manure in the soil - the list is almost endless.
