  • Spinach, Chard and Tuscan Kale

    Hi all

After a funny Summer where a lot of what I sowed, lettuces, Spinach and Chard etc., failed to take off, I was wondering if would be possible to try Spinach, Tuscan Kale and Chard again now that the temperatures have dropped? Based in Kent.

    All advice greatly received.

I direct sowed spinach I think about 10 days or a week ago, and it all came up quickly, so I would say go for it My first sowing a couple of months ago failed in the heat, and what germinated went to seed straight away.
After the drought the little rain that we've had has brought out the slugs, so I'm sowing my kale now in modules/pots and then planting out.

Chard, i haven't gown, maybe somebody else will know

I'd say it was a good time of year to sow all of them as they're less likely to bolt now that the daylight hours are diminishing.
Go for it - you know you want to!

I have some chard just an inch high, ready for planting out over the weekend. You are much further south, so I am sure it will be fine sown now ;-)

Thanks Chillithyme, VeggieChicken & Chestnut (I enjoyed writing those names out) for taking the time to respond, it's much appreciated. I will go again with module sowing and hope for better luck.

Does anyone else split the three or four plants that come from one chard seed cluster?

I had to plant mine during heat wave. Thought they were beyond redemption as badly wilted but copious watering revived them and they're cropping well now.

I leave them to self seed - 'cos I'm lazy and I like surprises
