  • Log uses

We recently had some trees cut down on our site, and have been invited to help ourselves to the resulting logs. They're around 18" in diameter and 8" thick. Anyone have any good ideas for using these?

Firewood? We have a log burner and I'd be biting someone's hand off.

I was thinking more of uses on the plot (other than burning).

I've been building a bug motel using logs (though not as big as yours) next to my wildlife pond.

Yes, a wildlife woodpile was one of my thoughts. Also thought about using them like a retaining wall where i'm terracing -but wondered how long they'd last half buried and whether they'd sprout, being freshly cut?

I’m sure VC had a terraced type garden that she used logs for a little “retaining wall”.

Do you know what type of wood it is? Could have a bearing on use.

Split them into shingles and re-tile your greenhouse.
                      Build a hibernaculum
Burn them for the mineral content in the ash to add to compost.
Burn them in a pit to make charcoal for making your own bio-char.
                      Make some swedish torches.
Split them into shingles and use them to edge beds.
Build a bug hostel - even cheaper than the hotel or motel.

I edge beds with them There are some big "slices" in the background, leaning against an old apple tree stump. You may have to watch that the willow doesn't root.

Its a bit cheaper and in the middle of no-where - lacks most of the facilities they'd expect at an hotel

Well thanks to the storm I now have several huge logs, two of which are still dangling from the tree entangled with branches. I’m going to have to pay a tree surgeon or run the gauntlet in the garden and driveway. ☹️

I've used some logs to edge some of my beds. Another guy on the site has done it across his entire plot.
