Strawberry advice

I've just potted up strawberry plantlets ( not runners) from old plants. Am I wasting my time ?, will they grow true ? If and when should I move them into a strawberry bed ?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by plantlets that aren't runners?
Do you mean you've split an old plant?

It is always best to propagate runners (small plantlets at this time year) to get disease free plants. That said, if you are taking cuttings (breaking off crowns and roots) - not recommended - but that is all you have then need to work with that. They will grow true, but if you don't know what was there, true to what will be the question?

If you have potted them up under cover, and you get long cold and wet winters ( I tried planting runners this time 2 year ago, half of them failed) then wait until next spring to set them out. If in south England, you should be fine now or once they are established.

Is a plantlet a plant that used to be a runner a few months ago but now it’s rooted & is a plant? That’s what’s happened to me at the moment,one of mines solidly rooted into the lawn. If you’ve just potted them up they’d prefer it in the ground,in pots it’s difficult to keep them watered. In the ground there’s enough moisture to not worry about them but water the hole you put them in,don’t bury them any deeper than they are right now,the crown can rot if it’s buried. Have you got a new strawberry bed for them or are you planting them in an area that’s had strawberries in it for a long time? If you’re planting them in a brand new bed you can do it now,if you’re using an old strawberry bed reconsider the idea because of nutrient deficiency,pest & disease build up.

I agree with JJ, you need to move strawberries every 4 or 5 years to a new bed, the farmers round here move the polytunnels and I follow their cycle pattern.

Agree... Silly me. Didn't give it a second thought. Made the assumption that was why they were propagating the plants.
