  • soil friendly wood preserve

    Hi folks,
I'm new to Grapevine and GYO, I am in the process of putting together a raised bed from scaffolding planks. I viewed a thread the other day regarding waterproofing scaffold planks and there was a link to a web site that supplies a soil / plant safe preserve. Does anyone know of such a site or what the product is called, any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Gary

I can't answer your questions Gary but welcome to the Grapevine!

      Welcome to the Grapevine, Gary

I'm not sure which thread you mean, but a Google Search yielded this website, and the products sound good. I have also read somewhere, that linseed oil does as good a job as anything, although it need reapplying periodically so do most other eco-friendly products. Hope that helps?

Hi and welcome to the vine Gary.

Your local DIY store will have a huge range of wood preservative - have a good read of the various ones and see which are suitable for what you require. I use Focus' own brand waterproof for my shed and a water based one for near plants - usually whatever is best value at the time and in the colour I want.

Hi Gary - welcome to the vine!

I reckon that Shirl's right - these days there's quite a range of 'friendly' preservatives - my store of choice is Wilko, but as long as you read the tin - and don't actually drink the stuff - i think you'll find one to suit at any of the DIY 'sheds'.

Happy gardening - and as we are all very nosy here on the vine (and it helps with the advice that peeps give to know whereabouts folks are), can you put your county/town in your 'location' box in your profile?

I have used linseed oil on my beds at home. there was an article in gyo a few months back in which they stated an anual coating of linseed was sufficient. it also brings out the colour of the wood. i would be concerned about using the type of preservaive designed for fences ect
