has anyone got any easy method of controling weeds. after this wet summer my allotment is over run with weeds. i usually cover over in winter but there as so many it may not work. any other ideas!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Buddy. i have managed to control my newly aquired rain forest/ allotment with a mixture of cardboard and carpet.This has worked very well for me. Good Luck Minty

If they're annual weeds, just pull them up. They can go on the compost heap. If they're perennials like nettles and docks then cover them with cardboard or carpet and dig later. Alternatively you could use weedkiller.

If you have time, you could try digging up as much as possible before covering up? It's to late in the year for glysophate to work (assuming you don't mind spraying), so the options are limited! My favourite method so far, is to cover with thick cardboard, followed by a layer of compost/well rotted manure, followed by weed suppressant fabric. Come spring the ground is very easy to work and weed roots are easier to remove. You do get some regrowth but it's easier to pull out!

a plot near me that was abandoned last year has just been taken. It's couch grass wall-to-wall and when I walked by the plot today saw the new people had covered up a big square of it with plastic. Only trouble was it was transparent plastic....
Hopefully will see them at the weekend to encourage putting some light excluding material down- would hate to see another lot give up.

Get some used straw- do you have stables near you? It will come with added manure!
Cover the area you need controlling and just leave it. You could take it off after a few Weeks/ couple of months, or you can leave the majority on and plant through it. Thus reducing weeding time through growing season.

I was overrun last year to I did a trial.

Patch one I covered in carpet tiles......From the skip at work
Patch two I hoed
Patch three I burned with the flame gun
Patch four I covered with cardboard.

The card was the best it kept them down all year then I rotovated it in, flame gun was second.

Welcome to the Vine Karlandven. You've had good advice on weed control from everybody. Sorry none of them are easy. You just have to choose the method that suits you and work at it bit by bit. They do give in eventually. The second year is easier than the first, the third year is easier than than the second etc. It's a long term project but every year brings it's own rewards. You'll see what I mean. Enjoy your successes.
