How to get rid of old carpet in allotment?

Hello all!

Just got a new plot, and it has miles of carpet all over it! And its been overgrown and everything is growing through the carpet, so its very difficult if not impossible to lift. Any ideas on how to get rid of it? Would killing the weeds make it easier to remove? Many thanks!

This is one reason that some allotment sites are now banning carpet. I had the same problem, but also with a lot of rotting roofing felt and corrugated plastic to boot.
As I have no car, I had to cut it/smash it with Stanley knife and hammer into smaller pieces and take it away in carrier bags. Then dropped it in street bins
It took a while to get rid of all of it, but little and often will do it, as with anything.

I've been getting it off bit by bit, but it covers about half the plot! plus there's underlay, plastic and sometimes even concrete slabs hiding underneath the weedy carpet! I need a machete or similar to cut it off, I tried with a swiss knife with no much luck I did think of a bonfire but was wondering about chemicals contaminating the soil? Plus, of course, the toxic smog as Two Sheds said...
