  • Flooded Allotments ?

    Hello folks,

Looking at the news about the flooding (Tewksbury area), I was just wondering if any one has had their allotment flooded?
My plot is on this site!

Keeping my fingers crossed for anyone in that area - or any flood danger area. Hope it subsides soon.

I'm very lucky to have the top 1/2 of a lottie, my poor bottom 1/2 neighbours onions are sat in a puddle.

Mine was pretty soggy this morning. It's wet throughout but there's only actual standing water at the bottom. My mate got his car stuck in the mud when he brought me some old double glazing units though! I had to run around the site till I found an old boy with a van to tow us out
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Not flooded yet but I'm worried about the weekend. I checked my plot yesterday and the river levels of the stream that is 20 yards away. It was high but there was still a couple of feet before it breaks the bank. However, BBC forecast has five days of heavy rain so with the ground being saturated I'm expecting it to rise. Fortunately/unfortunately down stream there is lower ground that will flood first but that might include houses so we don't want that.

In the mid summer deluge my plot was under 3 feet of water at the worst point. When it dropped a bit I waded through to take some pictures you can see on my blog HERE

It will take some going to get back to that but if it does I'll be very tempted to forget the whole allotmenting thing. Its too disheartening to see all your hard work go to waste plus it takes so long to dry out. At least I have't got any crops in yet and fingers crossed everything is ok. I'll check again on Saturday. Amamzing thing is the site had never flooded before are its been there over 30 years. Surely it can't flood twice in the space of 12 months? Or maybe I'm a jinx?!

Blimey Matt, just had a look at your blog and you were really hit badly, weren't you!? Great to see the optimism creeping back into your later posts though. Everything crossed for you!

I hope you're not a Rain God Matt! I hope it doesn't happen to you again - bad enough once.

Oh no Matt - everything crossed for you - and for everyone else in danger of flooding. I don't know what my site is like, my first month on there, but I'm off to find out on the way home!

Thinking of everyone in danger of flooding - take care folks.

Thanks for the messages of support from everyone.

Sadly my optimism is fading. I drove past last night and again this morning and the surrounding fields are now turning into lakes just like before. I doubt my plot will remain dry.

Hopefully I'll get chance to have a look this afternoon before it gets dark. I have my camera so I'll take some pictures. Sadly I've heard that the Botley road allotments in Oxford are already flooded and that is really sad. Those folk were hit really badly earlier on in the year. I don't think anyone on here is a member there but nevertheless I know how gutted they must be.
