  • Help! look what I have found..

    a monster of a crown!

There is no snow in our area yet, so its a nice sunny morning and just time to dig over my last bed in my new lottie.. but wait what the hell is this...
looks like a large asparagus crown , yes thats a dust bin lid! So I've found an old asparagus bed. Its in the wrong place for me, so..

    1) Is it worth moving the crowns, I do have a bed for my own crowns, but they are not as large as these?

    2) Get rid of them, if so, in this bed I intend to grow, brassicas and will be adding some lime, will the asparagus roots left in grow new crows or rot away?

    3) I was told that asparagus growers replant every 4 years, and yet in some books they say the crowns can be productive for 30 years - who is correct?

I do love asparagus, so this is a lucky find

    many thanks in advance,
    Steve(spt)

      Welcome to the Vine Steve!
That's not really very big- get them moved in March to where you want them- they'll be fine!

I think the plants last a good 20 yrs- so it looks like you've tumbled across a gold mine there!!

If there is no crown, the plants won't regrow...they tend to die off a few at a time anyway and send out new roots to replace them.

      Enjoy!!!

Good find !! The only things I've found buried in mine are bricks & plastic!
Should be ok to move while dormant, & you can give it a lovely feed too

          Thanks for all your comments.

In the end I found around 15 crowns and have moved them to a new part of the lottie where they can put down their deep roots.
