In Tune With The Moon

I have just recieved my guide to Lunar Gardening with the Organic Gardening Calendar by Erika Pepe.

Does anyone garden this way or has anyone tried it and what were the results compared to modern ways. eg did you get better crops or when it was full moon, did you grow hair on the back of your hands. Iwould like to hear from you moonies.

Hi.
I do try and stick to it, but when it is nice and a weekend, then once the moon stuff is done, sometimes i can't help myself - I found the most interesting thing is that on the days when you should not do anything in the garden, and because of last year's weather issues i did something [plant or transplant etc] - on those seeds/plants - NOTHING would happen - either no growth or no fruit [eg a pumpkin I planted on a no day, never grew any fruits; whilst all the others that were growing nearby were fine]...I had to do it on a non-fruit day as my OH's daughter wanted to plant one on her birthday and so it had to be done. Also, seeds would come up above ground on the exact day for their type, so peas would appear on a fruit day, onions on a root day etc.

I didn't do any actual trials as last year was so rubbish - but I will be doing some this year [having a non-moon bed when I get the lottie].

As soon as I get the lottie I'll start a moon blog on here and post any successes/failures. That's the best I can do I am afraid!!!

my mate does moon planting and i was round there today and suggested she did a trial, maybe just cut two flowers from the same plant, one on a moon day and one not and see what happens, if it lasts longer etc.. so she will, and i will let you know the outcome.

We do it, but sometimes - like last summer - conditions are against you and you have to just do things when you can, so try not to get too hysterical about it, you'll still get crops. I've found that when sown on the 'right' day seedlings may actually take longer to emerge, but when they do they are stronger and sturdier and far less likely to grow leggy.

Thanks for all the help folks. As this is the first time i will be moon gardening, i will put photos on my blog as and when. And honestly state what the results are positive and negative compared to how i have gardened in the past.

Hi Chuffa, I'm intending to try this myself for the first time this year. I'm still very new to GYO anyway but I've heard good things about it, including an interview Chris Evans did with the head gardener at Highgrove which was just fascinating. I've invested in the Erika Pepe calendar too and was really impressed - it looks easy to follow and even if I don't have any moon success it's gorgeous to look at!

Hi Bibliobeck, according to the new calendar, (if i have got it right) Ishould be planting my first earlys and onion sets on 22 March, a little later than i would here in Suffolk. Will keep all informed how it goes.

A lot of French people follow moon gardening. Apparently some of the 'oldies'/those in the know will only have their hair cut at a certain time in the lunar cycle!
Must be something in it!

I am following the sidereal moon calendar as closely as possible.

I use the Gardeners Calendar moon planting guide and a very good book called gardening and planting by the moon by Nick Kollerstrom.

As this is my first growing year working with the moon, I can't really give any results. As for advice, there are many theories on this subject, I was confused as to whether to use the synodic, biodynamic or the sidereal method as they all seem to say something different for the same day. I had to look for the one that suited my circumstances best and stick with it.
