Just arranged an allotment for my school

Hi all

Our allotment society is starting to work with the community by turning one alltoment into a disabled access plot with raised beds, another one into split smaller plots which they are letting the primary schools use and I have just managed to secure a 3/4 plot for the high school that I work at on behalf of the head of 6th form.

He is going to get the kids into gardening and once the plot is cleaned up and established he is going to get the lower school involved as well.

This all came about because he approached me to ask how to clear a turfed area within school grounds to use for growing veggies, as we had just had our AGM on the allotments (well in the pub actually) I knew about the new developments with schools coming on board so I approached the chairman and they have agreed a plot for our school..

I reckon the head of the 6th form owes me one, as the allotments are next door to our school.

I wonder if anyone elses allotments work with schools and disabled groups in this way?

I first learned to enjoy gardening at Secondary School which had extensive gardens of it's own, all cared for by the pupils and the maths teacher in his spare time.

I always got praise for my gardening, but always got wrong for my maths!

I work at a college for adults with Autism. We didnt get a plot at an allotment but at the little sisters of the poor in sunderland. The students have worked 2 years to set it up and have done an excellent job. Its run like a business and all the money goes back in the garden. The students love it.

We have two plots that are used by people who suffer with Mental Health problems, the only trouble they have is they aren't allowed to be brought up if the weather it bad cause of Health and safety issues - they are all well hacked off as they are itching to get on the plot !
