  • What a great day (ish). I have another lottie(ish)....

Finally after a year on the site i met my neighbour today. He is a great old boy called Pete.
On chatting he tells me that due to his and his wifes ailments that this year would be his last on his plot and asked if i would like half this year with the idea of a total hand over next year............And of cause i`m bloody made up....BUT i am going to find it so hard as i feel like i am taking over his passion.
I am going to spend the rest of this year trying to convince him not to give it up although i know he is strong of mind and this will take some doing and for his and his wifes sake should i even try?.
Although i am so happy at being given this opportunity i am so not looking forward to the shake of hands next year and then watch him leave the site he has worked on for over 30 years because quite frankly there are two things that are close to my heart and can start me blubbing like a girl, they are babies and OAP`S(don`t know why but they do).
    SO Happy Yet sad.
Anyone else had this kind of thing ?, Minty X

just a word of warning, can he just hand it over to you i say this because if theres a waiting list you might not be able to take up his offer, if you can take it could you not take half and help him with the other if he needs it then at least he can keep his hand in so to speak

Yes i did offer to help him next year to be told "the wife wanted me to give it up THIS year" and i will of cause offer again and again this year.
As to weather he can PERSONALLY hand it over to me then no i don`t suppose he can but as the suggestion was made in front of the chairman i did prompt him for a response and the response given was slightly veiled in "if you`re on the plot THEN YOUR ON THE PLOT!! .
We do have a waiting list at the moment with one person on it.......ME,

I bet it will be some comfort to him knowing it's going to somone who'll look after it though.

Hopefully he'll be able to persuade his wife that a bit of 'pottering' would be good for him and then you'll all be happy.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Hi Seahorse. Pete did say to me "By heck lad youve done a bloody good job of ya plot, the last bloke couldn`t give a stuff".
As for his wife, i think it`s more of the fact that she NEEDS him to be at home other than wants him to so i have to tread carefully with the persuasion thing. Although it is understood on our site that the old boys keep their keys so they can drop in at any time,,,,which is nice.
I think the problem with me is i put myself in their shoes and think their lives are going to crumble when they give up their lottie but would love to think they are ACTUALLY off on a 5 year cruise thinking stuff it!!!!!.

That's so nice Minty, I bet you're well chuffed that he's impressed enough with your plot to want to hand you the reigns of his. I was complimented on my plot by one of the 'old boys' the other day & I got such a lump in my throat
I'm sure you'll do him proud, and if you were to pop round with some produce for them once he's 'retired' I'm sure it'll go down well

I've just had a look at the photos on your blog Minty. It looks like you're doing really well on your first plot, so this guy will probably be happier knowing you have his beloved plot rather than passing it to an unknown person who may leave it to go to ruin. You'll be doing him a favour by making his transition easier.

It sounds like a great plan on both sides, Minty. After all, if he's keeping the keys he can still pop round for a cup of tea and a chat (and a bagful of spare produce!) occasionally, without his wife feeling like a lottie widow

we did the same thing, our plot is on its own and the old fella up the street was always stopping by to chat while I was planting veg in our tiny garden, then his wife came around and said if you want it its yours they were moving to be nearer their children the plot was a mess, he hadnt been able to keep up with it for quite a few years.

                    give all you can
and your produce will be bountifull
