Spaced out potatoes

Hi

I'm a novice at all this and have made my first (of probably many) mistakes. I've just sown my first main crop potato however instead of spacing the rows around 75cms apart, have only allowed 40cm between rows (the same as between chitted seeds in the actual row!!!).

What's going to happen? Should I dig up and re-sow?

40cm is about 16 inches in old money methinks?
My earlies are planted 3 rows to a 4 foot wide bed, thats about 12 inches apart both ways, staggered.
I usually plant my maincrop at two rows to a 4 foot bed so that makes them 2 foot apart with 15 inch between plants
All that will happen is you will have a bit smaller crop unless you can re-do them!

Don't dig 'em up again - they'll be fine. It will be awkward to earth them up, but there's more than one way to skin a cat: instead of earthing them up, mulch around them with compost or old leaves or suchlike - anything that'll stop the light hitting the tubers as they show above ground.

Spaced out potatoes? What have you been chitting them in?

I reckon you'll be fine - don't dig them up, you'll probably damage those lovely shoots you've been nurturing.

I plant my spuds about 12 inches apart (sorry, I can't think in metric). You can do them further apart for larger spuds, or closer for smaller ones. Horses for courses!

Somewhat of a relief that although I may not have exemplary potatoes at least I should have something to sustain the wife and kids over winter.

I would dig them all up for sure.. Then pop over to plot 19 and replant...
