Veg plug plants

I'm hopefully getting a Lottie in the next few weeks (fingers crossed!) by the time I get on it, it is going to be too late to sow much, so I was thinking of getting in some plug plants. I know it's more costly than growing your own, but at this late stage I think it maybe the only way to get much of the early stuff in! I will be ok for the later sown crops like runners and sweetcorn - still time to sow them.

Anyone use veg plug plants or have any good links?

I dont think its too late to sow seeds depends how much work needs doing to your plot.
Lots of us still have seeds to sow. Have you got a window sill or somewhere you could start seeds off. What do you want to grow?

I've got some plug plants on order, from Dobies and Thomson & Morgan, for later on during the year...

I've sowed seed as well, but they're a bit of a back up as well as "extra" supplies

car boot sales closer to the time are good and you can see the quality of what your buying there alot cheaper but you could also try putting a wanted on freecycle.

Things like Broad beans and parsnips are too late now, along with early peas and sugar snaps, potatoes, etc. I reckon it will be at least a couple more weeks before I can even get onto the lottie, I've then got to start clearing it. It's going to be around mid May before I can get anything in.

I will sow seeds now of course, but under normal circumstances I would have liked to have got most of my seeds sown by now!

The prices seem very good. I think I will give them a go to make up for my late start.
Also the car boot idea sounds good. I normally avoid these things like the plague, but I may just have to go and scout one out.

When i got my first allotment it was early May and i was in a similar predicment. I concentrated on getting a small bed ready and used this as a seedbed for brassicas, even though i had no place to plant them at the time.

I sowed PSB,sprouts,cauli,kale(3 types)summer cabbage,winter cabbage all in one day.
By the time they were ready for transplanting I just about had their intended area ready to recieve them!

get on ebay ive bought a few veg things from a certian seller merlyndriver and all her plants are going like guns i got 30 pea plants delivered for 2.60.it just fills in the gaps if you forget to sow seeds and start a little later or you want a certain special something x

I've gotten plugs from suttons, and also bought from local GC and B&Q and other DIY chain here (Woodies). Similar predicament last spring, and was rubbish at sowing seeds in time for winter brassicas. It meant we got cabbages, calabrese, cauliflowers, french beans and lettuices last summer. And cabbages, P&White SB coming now, and caulis in a few weeks for the winter. As well as tomatoes for my hanging basket.

This year I have managed to get my own seedlings, but may yet have to get beans as plugs. not as cost efficient - but it does mean produce when otherwise there may be none so definitely a good idea. And you still have plenty of time to sow at home too to bring up in a few weeks time.

I am still sowing broad beans and parsnips - it's not too late at all. Get them started indoors now if you can. It's nearly time to sow French beans, runners, squash and sweetcorn too. Salad you can sow all summer, and Orientals get sown towards the end of summer. You've got loads of time - you just don't have a lottie yet.

On your allotment, you will probably find that people give you loads of stuff to get you started, so don't spend too much money on plug plants.
