  • wire worm

    While digging and clearing plot for planting ,have found alot of wire worms in soil any advice on how to kill these little blighters,would be much appreciated.

    KK With a sharp thumb nail, from what I have read lots of cultivation of the ground they dont like being disturbed or there are methods like burying bags of bran which after a time you dig up and burn, growing wheat which you do the same, or there is a plant that attracts them, the wire worm enters the plant and the plant dies as the plant dies you dig this up and dispose taking the wire worm with it.

          always wondered what they were have seen them in garden and lottie and left them alone not anymore tho thanks thats two bugs i found today that i can do without.

              I just have a flat piece of board next to me whenever I'm turning the soil over. Any nasty beasties which come to light get put on the board, which I then put on top of the wheel barrow when I go & the birds have a feast! This includes wire worms, slugs, slug eggs, vine weevil grubs, chafer grubs etc. Seems to work, haven't had much trouble with any bugs except snails! *Touching wood*

                Thanks for the advice will try this. I want to encourage more birds on to allotment and this seems to be an ideal way .
