  • Cow manure in France....

    I need your help folks!!!!

My OH has just ordered a tractor scoop load of cow manure for tomorrow morning - without seeing it 1st

I think it will be about the same amount as half a trailer load which we have bought in the UK (£20)

The problem is that the farmer was quite surprised we had asked for some as he'd never been asked before!!

I'm now wondering if it's going to be fresh slurry rather than 1yr rotted muck

My problem is...he has no idea what to charge....and I've no idea what would be a fair price- esp until we see it!!

What would you suggest would be a fair deal???

Also those of you who live in France.....what do you do for muck??????

I could do with knowing before he turns up in the early hours of the morning peeps!!!!

Here we have sheep, no cows (Roquefort sheep). I got a tractor fork full from a friend which was last year's. He was a little perplexed at the idea of charging for something he has piling up in the yard - but that could just be him. I would think that so long as he knows what you need it for you should be alright. Certainly every man and his dog here has a potager and uses manure. Perhaps he was surprised at your timing - all the potagers here were manured in early march. You did ask for fumier didn't you? (and not merde!!!!!!????)

I assume he's pleased to get rid of it, therefore offer him a coffee or a glass of wine. If it's fresh, then stack it to rot down.

I know what merde is but can that also be cow as well as human?

Un fumier is a dung heap or generically dung. (always amusing as English quite often use it when asking for a light...as-tu un fumier? rather than avez vous de feu) You might also say Terrain tres bien fume(acute on e) meaning land well manured (as opposed to smoked where the word probably derives...fumer to smoke as a dung heap appears to)

Hey Nicos what happened here then? How much manure did you get and how much did it cost you? You can't just stop in the middle of a tale you know!

                  Ok then!!!!

We got about 3/4 trailer load for £20
It's organic too- so we're really pleased-esp as it's well rotted
( loads of free worms too!)

First of our spuds have come up- 3 weeks after planting, and the strawberries are covered in flowers

...too hot to garden at the mo...so just sipping a beer, munching pistatio nuts ...and thinking about collecting in the washing to iron

You've been seen off, I get as much as I want for nothing except a few jars of jam, some eggs and home made soup.
