You can eat squirrel Nicos, in posh London Resturants it's called flightless Partridge , presumably to appease the bunny hugger that don't have allotments

I've just found some seed in the bottom of my seed tin, so I'll try them for anti black fly uses this year.

Sunflowers

I've grown sunflowers (Russian Giant) for the last three years for my daughter, and last year I started them off in biodegradable pots in unheated greenhouse and they were very poor compared to those planted direct the two previous years. This years maxxed out at about 7-8 ft, but both previous years I have had several at about 12ft. When I lifted them in the back end, the pots were not what you would call degraded at all - so this was probably to blame as the roots had obviously been held in check.
I plant two seeds by each 8ft bamboo cane and this in turn is attached to some of my garden wires running along the south facing wall, so I have plenty of support - my garden has three sides walled to about 7ft and the wind fairly whistles over the top and eddies around in two of the corners, so most of my taller plants are well supported. Then choose the stronger of the two plants and discard the weaker.

Trust me, if I had my way it would be, but OH wants flower beds and somewhere to entertain friends, daughter needs space for trampoline and swing and to generally run about and tire herself out.
It is a victorian house, so it's a proper walled garden on three sides (if you count the back of the house as a wall) with a lap panel fence dividing us from the neighbours, but as I say, the winds up here can be pretty strong and they do tend to swirl around particularly in the top two corners - have had to retie my rambler rose bush at least three times in last two years - wires didn't break - the "hammer in" vine eyes were pulled out the sandstone !!
