I asked SWMBO what she wanted for her birthday and was told "A polytunnel and a greenhouse". She spends almost as much time on her plot as I do on mine.http://norm-foodforthought.blogspot.com/

Sorry to hear that, but it neednt be like that!
Mr D and I took over a badly neglected plot in October 2006, and spent 6 months digging and clearing it together. It was something he decided he wanted to do, and I then said I'd help, only to get bitten by the GYO bugmyself and become as enthusiastic as he is! We took a second full plot 2 weeks ago, which was overgrown (tho did have some structure in place), and in the past 2 weeks almost all of the beds have now been cleared, we both work full time, and its been backbreaking (and yes, the house is now an absolute tip), but we're ready to get it all planted and have most of our veg for the coming year grown organically for ourselves!
If its something you can support each other in, then it neednt become something that causes friction within a relationship, and if its only 1 person that wants to do it, then you have to set limits on just how much time and money you can put into it, communication is the key here methinks!Blessings

Sorry to hear of your experience, but I guess its the same for any interest if only one of you is interested in something and the other is not supportive. :-(
My husband is not a keen gardener but is more than happy to help me with the things I can't manage myself as he is very keen on the idea of homegrown food!! We have very different interests but support each other in doing them so we're both happy.
I've just been allocated a plot that is quite overgrown, and hubby will be glad to have the remote control to himself when I'm over there if he's not with me!!

Me and my OH have differant hobbies, I have an allotment and try to go there in the week when he is at work although I also go at weekends if we are not doing anything else. He is not a gardener but will help with heavy stuff, he sorted out my shed by putting in work tops and shelves, he will sort out the paths and the fencing, otherwise he leaves it too me.
He collects coins and spend his time looking on e-bay for them something that i am not interested in and i like to be outdoors.
You have to have a compromise what works for us might not work for someone else.Gardening ..... begins with daybreak
and ends with backache

even if she dont like gardening ask her if there is anything she would like you to grow, explain it cuts shopping bills, so leaves extra cash for weekends away or treats. i find if me and oh spend too much time together i want to kill him or divorce him so i would love a lottie, but with a toddler in afternoon nursery i dont know if it would work but im thinking about it. you could always get her a sun umbrella and a sun lounger and a good book and she could watch you work, shirt off and all that, id get my oh to do that but id be the one doing the work on the lottie so being a women no shirt off for me.
