My Surprise Raspberry Canes!

Hi All,

I was able to get 1 1/2 allotments after been on a waiting list since October just 4 weeks ago. My husband has the job of digging over the allotment and I have the job of clearing brambles, nettles and dandelions.

Whilst I was clearing a large patch of brambles I found about a dozen Rasberry canes!! I don't know anything about growing raspberries and they were very lucky to have been spotted.

I have been to the allotment today and tied them onto 8ft canes purely to prevent me from hacking them down whilst I clear the remainder of the brambles.

What I need to know is, what I should do now?

There is already fruit developing on them and don't want to kill them off, can anyone advise me please.

Leave them where they are this year and top dress with compost, water when the fruit appears, for bulkier fruit. They are quite thirsty at this stage so don't be mean. When they have died back, cut off to about 10 inches off the ground. When you are ready at the end of autumn, you can move them to wherever you want. Bear in mind that towards the end of the season the plant will send up new shoots which will bear fruit for next year, these can be moved at the same time.
